McMurrich JPS: Tissue Paper Hot Air Balloons

Our Grade 6 classes were presented with the opportunity to learn about the properties of air and principles of flight through a brief history and construction of hot air balloons. While working in partners, students were posed with the challenge to build a tissue paper hot air balloon. At the end of the day, each partnership launched their balloons in the gym with a small audience from the primary division.

With the support from Media Services and a pilot project with Atomic Learning, students will be using new software applications to share their learning with Audacity, Photo Story and Movie Maker. Please visit this blog regularly as it will be updated over the next few days.

To reach and/or book your own session for a workshop hosted by Klaus and Sigrid Richter, they can be reached at klaus-sigrid@sympatico.ca.

A special thanks to Klaus and Sigrid Richter for joining us and providing a full day of insight and hands on learning. Also, a extended thanks to the Parent Council for their support in providing funds for this enrichment opportunity. I am sure you will all be quite proud of the learning that went on during that day and since, throughout this blog. Enjoy :o)

  2. The tissue paper hot air balloons was so cool. Learning how to make it and fly them was great. It would be good to fly them again. Are we going to have more scientists visit us at school? JESSICA

  3. I thought that the tissue paper hot air balloon assignment was really cool because we learned a lot of things about flight. Like what size is better for a hot air balloon to fly. I have never done anything like this before but I really enjoyed it :) Valeria

  4. I really enjoyed the experiments that we did with the scientists because it was very exciting creating a tissue paper balloon and learning about properties of air. I wish I could do this activity again. JESSICA

  5. This experiment was especially fun because we got to design and build our own tissue paper hot air balloons. In between building the balloons we learned different flight facts, flight timelines and all about hot air balloons. Watching the balloons fly up in the gym was kind of exciting because we built them ourselves and that they actually flew! Overall it was a REALLY fun day!!! :o) Keiko

  6. Making a tissue paper hot air balloon was really fun! Mr and Ms Richter taught us a lot about hot air balloons. I really enjoyed learning about the hot air balloon ride display for the king back in France many years ago because it was interesting knowing why they chose each type of animal to test out if the balloon was safe! My favourite part of the day was when the balloons were flying in the gym because they all looked really nice! Julie

  8. The tissue paper hot air balloon was great. Thank you Mr and Ms Richter. I am really happy that you came and showed us how to make a hot air balloon =) I am kind of sad that my tissue paper balloon had a small tear in it because I was worried that it wouldn't fly :( Making the hot air balloons was fun and I wish I can make another one soon. 11. I thought that this workshop was awesome! I found the history interesting, and making and decorating the balloon was fun. The final launch was my favourite part, because I thought that it was really cool that we were able to make something ourselves that actually flew. Watching the balloons fly seemed to make it more official. Since I now know more about hot air balloons, riding in a realy one seems even more exciting!! Holly

  12. Making Tissue paper hot air balloons was an awesome experience! I found alot of the things that the 2 instructors told us, pretty interesting. I really liked learning about all of the facts on hot air balloons and their history! I hope we'll be doing things like this through out the school year! Chloe :o)

  13. There is great feedback being shared about your learning experiences during this visit with the Richters. Use this blog as an opportunity to further discuss the innovations by those inventors who were mentioned throughout the day. How did their ideas impact how the world viewed flight? How would you compare change in flight then to more recent years?

  14. I really enjoyed making hot air balloons, eventhough it took lots of time and effort it was worth it because all that hard work payed off by seeing the hot air balloon fly in the air and all the kinders were showing great excitement by yelling and screaming. Ravi

  15. Building the hot air balloons was so awesome! I had so much fun building and decorating the balloons, and learning about the history of hot air balloons and about the first forms of flight was really cool and interesting as well.
My favourite part of the workshop was actually seeing all the balloons fly because #1 they looked so pretty and colourful flying in the air, and it was pretty cool to think that something you made (apart from a paper airplane) actually flew. All in all this was a great experience and I hope the grd 6’s next year will be able to participate in this workshop because they’ll have a BLAST!!

  16. Making the hot air balloons was really interesting and educational! It was fun to see how people would decide to decorate their balloons. Launching the balloons was cool and the audience (kindergartens) were very excited. Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Richter! Sophie ;]

  17. Making the hot air baloons was really fun and it was really cool to see them fly up in thye air with no visible means of support. The kindergarteners really enjoyed it and were screaming with excitement every time a baloon went upin the air. It was a great experience and if I ever got the chance I would definitely do it again if ever possible.
